The Paris Paralympics have kicked off with an electrifying start, showcasing the remarkable talent and spirit of Australian athletes across various events. As the world tunes in, the Australian contingent has wasted no time in making a significant impact.
In the para-swimming arena, the first day of competition saw a flurry of Australian athletes diving into action. Among them, Alexa Leary made headlines with her performance in the women's S10 50m freestyle heats. Leary, who is competing in the S9 classification, initially set a Paralympic record with a time of 27.69 seconds. However, this record was soon eclipsed by American swimmer Christie Raleigh-Crossley, who clocked an impressive 27.28 seconds. Despite this, Leary’s strong performance has set her up as a formidable contender for the final, scheduled to take place early tomorrow morning.
Joining Leary in the pool were other Australian stars, including Rowan Crothers and Thomas Gallagher, who competed in the men’s S10 50m freestyle. Gallagher set the pace as the fastest qualifier for the final, while Crothers, the defending champion, secured a spot among the top contenders. In the women’s S9 400m freestyle, Lakeisha Patterson displayed why she is the reigning world champion by dominating her heat and securing the top qualifying time.
