George Clooney's Latest Project Brings Hollywood Glamour to Oxford
In a thrilling blend of Hollywood allure and historic academia, Oxford University is currently playing host to a major film production led by none other than George Clooney. The prestigious institution has become a bustling set for the much-anticipated series "The Department," featuring acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender.
Earlier this week, Mansfield Road in the heart of Oxford’s city center was closed off to accommodate the shoot. The road was lined with traffic cones, and parking restrictions were enforced to ensure a smooth operation. Locals, caught up in the excitement, were left intrigued and somewhat inconvenienced as they navigated around the closed-off area. One local, who chose to remain anonymous, shared their curiosity with the Oxford Mail: “No parking is allowed due to a Hollywood movie being shot this week but the security at the site wouldn’t tell me what it was.”

The buzz around town was initially fueled by speculation. Some residents believed the filming was linked to Guy Ritchie's latest project, as the location—Magdalen College—hinted at such a possibility. However, it has since been confirmed that the real force behind the production is the legendary George Clooney. The show, set to air on Paramount+, is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed French series "Le Bureau des Légendes."
Michael Fassbender, known for his stellar roles in "X-Men" and "Inglourious Basterds," stars in this new series, aptly titled "The Department." According to an insider who spoke to the Oxford Mail, “The filming at Magdalen College and the Earth Sciences department last week was for 'The Department,' which stars Michael Fassbender and is executive produced by George Clooney.”
The series, which began production in June, will consist of ten one-hour episodes. It is being directed by Joe Wright, renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and visually captivating storytelling. The scripts are crafted by the talented duo Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, with Clooney and Grant Heslov joining forces as executive producers. Chris McCarthy, CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, praised the project, stating, “Joe Wright is a visionary director with a gift for creating immersive and visually striking stories. Jez and John-Henry are masterful writers whose work dives deep into characters' moral complexities while driving a compelling narrative. Bringing these powerhouse creatives together, alongside George Clooney and Grant Heslov, is sure to provide 'The Bureau' with the reinvention it deserves.”
This isn't George Clooney’s first brush with Oxford. Earlier this year, he and his wife Amal visited the city for the Skoll World Forum, a foundation dedicated to fostering a sustainable world. The couple has also been seen around the local area, including attending an Oxford University Boat Club training session in Wallingford.
As Oxford embraces its role in this high-profile production, the excitement continues to build. Fans of Michael Fassbender and George Clooney eagerly await the series, which promises to deliver a gripping narrative with top-notch production values. For now, the city is basking in the glow of Hollywood glamour, courtesy of its temporary but glamorous new residents.
