Horry County Schools Excel in Statewide Educational Assessments, Surpassing State Averages
In an impressive display of academic excellence, Horry County Schools have outshone the rest of the state in three critical standardized educational assessments. The South Carolina Department of Education recently released data showcasing the exceptional performance of students from Horry County, who consistently surpassed state averages across the board. This is a significant achievement that underscores the district's commitment to providing high-quality education and preparing students for future success.
The assessments in question include the SC READY test, the End-of-Course Examination Program, and the South Carolina Career Ready Test. These tests are crucial in evaluating student performance and readiness for the next stages in their academic and professional careers. Achievement levels are categorized into four distinct groups: Exceeds Standard, Meets Standard, Approaches Standard, and Does Not Meet Standard.
Starting with the SC READY test, which assesses students' proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics, Horry County students performed exceptionally well. In the ELA portion, the percentage of students scoring at the highest performance levels was 6.5 percentage points higher than the state average. In mathematics, the difference was even more pronounced, with Horry County students outperforming their state peers by 7.2 percentage points. These results highlight the district's strong emphasis on foundational skills in reading and math, which are critical for academic success.

The End-of-Course Examination Program (EOC), which includes subjects like Algebra I, Biology, English II, and U.S. History and Constitution, also saw Horry County students achieving higher passage rates than the state averages. For instance, 88.3% of Horry County students passed the Algebra I exam, significantly outpacing the state’s average passage rate of 72.5%. Similarly, in Biology, 71.9% of district students passed, compared to the state's 62.9%. These statistics are not just numbers; they reflect the hard work and dedication of both students and educators in Horry County, who are striving to achieve academic excellence.
Moreover, in the English II exam, Horry County students achieved an 87.7% passage rate, slightly higher than the previous year's performance and above the state's 85.8% rate. Perhaps most impressively, the passage rate for U.S. History and Constitution was 71.5%, significantly higher than the state's 58.8%. This shows that Horry County is not only keeping pace with the state's educational standards but is also leading the way in many respects.
The South Carolina Career Ready Test, which evaluates employability skills, further demonstrated Horry County’s superiority. Of the 3,489 students who completed all three employability skills assessments during the 2023-2024 school year, 78.7% received a credential, with 61.3% earning a designation of Career-Ready by scoring a Level 3 or higher. This is notably higher than the statewide figures, where only 72.2% of students received a credential, and 52.9% achieved a Level 3 or higher.
Breaking it down further, Horry County students excelled in specific components of the Career Ready Test. In math, 66.4% of students scored at Level 3 or higher, compared to the state’s 57.9%. On the data test, 75.9% of students reached Level 3 or higher, while the state average was 68.5%. Lastly, in reading, 76.7% of Horry County students scored at Level 3 or higher, outperforming the state’s 71.2%.
These results paint a clear picture: Horry County Schools are not only meeting but exceeding expectations. The district's ability to consistently outperform state averages across multiple assessments is a testament to the quality of education being delivered.
