Karachi Police Charge Driver in Murder Case Following Tragic Karsaz Accident
The streets of Karachi witnessed a tragic event on August 19, 2024, when a devastating accident occurred on Karsaz Road, claiming the lives of two individuals and injuring several others. The incident, which has since sent shockwaves through the city, involved a speeding SUV driven by a woman identified as Natasha Danish Iqbal, a close relative of a prominent industrialist. The Karachi police have now charged the driver with murder, a move that underscores the severity of the incident and the need for accountability.
The accident took place on a Monday evening when Natasha, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, allegedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to negotiate a turn from Tipu Sultan Road towards the service road of Muslim League House. The out-of-control SUV first struck a motorcycle, then collided with two more motorcycles before overturning and crashing into a parked car. The chaotic sequence of events resulted in five people being injured, two of whom, Imran Arif and his daughter Amna Arif, later succumbed to their injuries at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

In the immediate aftermath, the police responded swiftly, registering a First Information Report (FIR) against Natasha. She was arrested later that night and handed over to the police’s investigation wing. The charges brought against her include sections of the Pakistan Penal Code related to rash and negligent driving, which resulted in the deaths and injuries. These charges have now been elevated to include murder, reflecting the gravity of the incident.
The case has garnered significant public attention, partly due to Natasha’s connections with a well-known industrialist and her possession of a British driving license. Moreover, the police have been keen to address any perception of leniency due to her background, emphasizing that "no one is above the law." They have assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and that justice will be pursued rigorously.
On the legal front, a Karachi East court has granted the police one-day custody of Natasha, despite her reported mental distress, which led to her admission to JPMC’s psychiatry department. The court has acknowledged the necessity of her physical custody for the investigation to proceed effectively. If she does not recover sufficiently to be produced in court, the police have been directed to apply for further orders.
The FIR, filed by Imtiaz Arif, the brother of the deceased Imran Arif, details the heart-wrenching sequence of events and the impact on his family. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the lives that can be irreparably changed in an instant.
As the investigation continues, Karachi’s police have reiterated their commitment to transparency and justice, with the investigation wing expected to produce a charge sheet based on merit as the case progresses. The tragic loss of two lives has left a deep mark on the community, and there is a collective hope that the legal process will provide some measure of closure for the victims' families.
