Luke Garner is set to achieve a significant milestone in his rugby league career, with his 100th NRL game approaching as the Penrith Panthers take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs. This Friday night at BlueBet Stadium will be a special moment for Garner, who has quietly become an integral part of the Panthers' forward pack.
Garner's journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. The 28-year-old Dubbo-born player started his NRL career with the Wests Tigers, making 75 appearances over five seasons. During his time at the Tigers, he honed his skills and built a reputation as a dependable forward. However, it wasn't until he moved to Penrith in 2023 that he truly began to flourish, culminating in a grand final victory with the Panthers in his first year at the club.

Reflecting on the milestone, Garner expressed a sense of pride and accomplishment. "It's very cool," he said. "There were a few moments in my life where I didn't think I'd get to play even one game, let alone 100. It's pretty special. Once I get through Friday night, I'll be able to sit back and reflect a bit more on it. Right now, I'm just focused on the game."
Garner's path to NRL success was paved with challenges. Before breaking into first grade, he worked as part of a ground staff team, maintaining lawns and footy pitches. This experience, he believes, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a determination to pursue his dream of playing professional rugby league. "That definitely taught me hard work," Garner explained. "It also taught me that it was definitely not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life."
Despite facing setbacks, including being overlooked by the Sydney Roosters and missing several games this season due to a hamstring injury, Garner's resilience has been a defining feature of his career. His time with the Roosters, where he primarily played in the reserve grade, was a crucial turning point. "As a younger guy, I was turned away from teams, and when I was at the Roosters, I was told more or less that I probably wouldn’t be a first-grade player. Getting pushed away from the Roosters back then, I look back on that as the best thing for me."
Now, as Garner prepares for his 100th NRL appearance, he remains focused on helping the Panthers turn around a recent slump and build momentum heading into the finals. "Last week against the Raiders was disappointing, but we took plenty of lessons from it," Garner said. "We have to try and learn from those things and not take the losses too hard. We’re still a good team. We’re still in the top four."
Garner’s journey is a testament to perseverance and the importance of seizing opportunities.
