Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Shakes Darwin but No Tsunami Threat
In a startling turn of events, Darwin experienced a significant seismic event earlier today. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern Territory, rattling the city and leaving residents both startled and curious. The tremor, which occurred around midday, originated from the Banda Sea at a depth of approximately 62 kilometers. Despite the intensity of the quake, the Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Australia.
The quake's impact was felt widely across Darwin, with numerous reports flooding into Geoscience Australia from anxious locals. Many office workers in the city reported their buildings shaking, and social media quickly became a platform for sharing their experiences. One user described the scene at their office on Mitchell Street, stating, “OMG! The six-floor office just rocked and swayed!” Another person, seemingly unfazed, quipped, “I’m putting my bathers away, then,” in response to the tremor alert.

This earthquake is part of a series of seismic activities affecting various regions. Just hours before the Darwin quake, a magnitude 3.0 tremor had jolted Victoria's Gippsland region. This earlier quake, centered near Sandy Point close to Wilsons Promontory, was also felt across several nearby towns including Foster and Inverloch.
Moreover, the seismic activity didn’t stop there. On Friday, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Upper Hunter region in New South Wales, near the Mount Arthur coal mine. This tremor caused significant disruptions, leaving thousands without power for several hours. It was felt as far away as Sydney, with some residents expressing their confusion and concern online.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre notes that earthquakes occurring at shallower depths are often felt more strongly than those at greater depths. This may explain why today's quake was so noticeable across Darwin. Additionally, residents in New South Wales experienced more tremors over the weekend, including a magnitude 4.4 quake and several smaller aftershocks, further highlighting the region’s ongoing seismic activity.
Overall, while the earthquake has certainly made its mark, the good news is that there is no risk of a tsunami. The situation remains under close monitoring by authorities to ensure that residents remain informed and safe. For now, Darwin residents are advised to stay alert and follow updates from local agencies.
