McDonald's Grimace Shake: A Purple Disappointment
The latest buzz around McDonald’s has been all about their new Grimace Shake, a vibrant purple concoction that's captured the curiosity of many. This shake has been making waves on social media since its arrival in the UK, but after finally getting a taste, I have to admit, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment.
I was among the throngs eager to try this unique beverage, especially after a year of hype following its viral debut in the US. With the Grimace Shake’s arrival marked as a major event, I imagined it would be easy to grab one during a lunch break. However, that plan hit a snag when I arrived at my local McDonald's only to discover the milkshake machine was out of order. Usually, I'd check the availability on Uber Eats, but in my rush, I overlooked that step, leading to a frustrating detour to another branch 10 minutes away.

Once I finally got my hands on the Grimace Shake, my anticipation was sky-high. Priced at £2.69 for a medium and £2.99 for a large, it’s a bit pricier than your standard McDonald's milkshake. Despite the initial thrill, the Grimace Shake turned out to be a letdown. The shake is supposed to be blueberry-flavored, and while it did smell faintly like a blueberry muffin, the taste left much to be desired. Instead of a mind-blowing flavor experience, it came across as just a standard blueberry milkshake—nothing extraordinary.
Having invested time and effort to try this much-talked-about shake, I felt particularly let down. It didn’t quite live up to the online rave reviews I had seen. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting a milkshake to be revolutionary, but I hoped it would be more memorable than it turned out to be. After a few sips, the excitement faded, and I found myself thinking, "It’s just a blueberry milkshake."
For those unfamiliar, Grimace is a long-standing character from McDonald's, known for his large purple appearance. Originally portrayed as a milkshake-stealing villain, he’s now a friendly figure who loves hugs and shakes. The Grimace Shake was introduced as a limited-time offering, temporarily replacing the vanilla option until September 3. Despite the hype, the shake’s novelty might not be enough to warrant a repeat purchase.
Overall, while the Grimace Shake might be a fun, Instagram-worthy treat, it didn’t live up to the high expectations set by its viral fame. It’s an enjoyable, albeit unremarkable, addition to the menu. If you’re curious, it’s worth trying before it disappears, but don’t expect it to become a staple of your McDonald's visits.
