Medvedev Stages Dramatic Victory to Reach US Open Last 16
Daniil Medvedev has once again showcased his prowess on the grand stage of the US Open, securing his spot in the fourth round after a gripping encounter with Flavio Cobolli. The Russian tennis star, a former champion at Flushing Meadows, fought hard to earn a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the determined 22-year-old Italian, continuing his impressive streak of reaching the last 16 for six consecutive years.
From the outset, it was clear that Medvedev faced a challenging opponent. Cobolli, ranked 31st, brought a fierce competitive spirit and a series of powerful rallies that energized the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. Despite his promising play, Cobolli's inexperience at this level proved a tough hurdle to overcome. The match saw Medvedev falling behind twice in the third set but, true to form, he mounted a resilient comeback each time, displaying the defensive skills that have become his trademark.

Medvedev, who is seeded fifth in the tournament, described the match as “tough,” acknowledging Cobolli’s impressive performance, especially in the latter stages. “He was just a little bit up and down and at one point started playing much better on my serve than his,” Medvedev said. The match turned on its head as Medvedev managed to win the final three games, ultimately sealing his victory on his second match point.
Looking ahead, Medvedev will face Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the next round. This will be their second meeting, with Medvedev having previously defeated Borges in the same round at the Australian Open earlier this year. Medvedev praised Borges for his aggressive style, noting that the Portuguese player’s recent performance, where he saved three match points against Jakub Mensik, had been particularly impressive.
This year’s US Open has already seen the surprising exits of top contenders like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, leaving Medvedev as the only former champion remaining in the draw. The Russian star’s victory in 2021, when he denied Djokovic a calendar Grand Slam, remains a significant highlight of his career. Despite reaching the finals at the Australian Open and the semi-finals at Wimbledon this year, Medvedev has not added a title to his name since the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome last May.
As the tournament progresses, Medvedev’s performance will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. With each match, he continues to demonstrate why he remains a formidable force in the world of tennis.
