Mitie has recently been awarded a significant five-year contract to handle grounds maintenance at Edinburgh Airport, a key player in the UK’s aviation sector. This prestigious contract covers a range of essential services across the airport's extensive estate, including both the airfield and terminal buildings.

As part of the new agreement, Mitie will undertake comprehensive landscaping tasks that encompass everything from regular grass cutting and tree maintenance to litter collection and weed control. In addition to routine maintenance, Mitie’s duties will expand to winter services. This involves gritting car parks, walkways, and roadways to prevent ice formation and ensure safe travel throughout the airport during adverse weather conditions. The team will also assist in maintaining taxiways, an essential task for the smooth operation of flight schedules during the winter months.

Mitie’s experience with major airports across the UK, including Heathrow, London Stansted, and Manchester, positions them well to handle the challenges presented by Edinburgh Airport, the sixth busiest airport in the UK and the busiest in Scotland. Tim Howell, Managing Director of Mitie Landscapes, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership. He emphasized Mitie’s commitment to using sustainable practices in maintaining the airport's vast grounds. This includes innovative approaches such as using white marine salt for gritting, a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional brown salt, which reduces residue and supports overall sustainability.

Brian Anderson, Head of Engineering at Edinburgh Airport, highlighted the importance of effective grounds and winter maintenance for the airport’s daily operations. He praised Mitie for their extensive expertise and their plans for future improvements, which are expected to enhance the service quality for both passengers and staff.

Mitie’s focus on sustainability also involves reducing plastic use and introducing more eco-friendly planting and wildflower areas around passenger entrances. These efforts aim to boost biodiversity and contribute positively to the airport’s environmental impact.

Overall, this new contract underscores Mitie’s growing footprint in the facilities management sector and their dedication to providing top-notch, environmentally conscious services at one of Scotland’s most vital transportation hubs.
