Hey everyone, it looks like we’re in for a bit of a weather shake-up in Las Vegas this weekend. For those of you who’ve been sweating it out in the sweltering heat, relief might be on the horizon with some much-needed rain and cooler temperatures.Starting Thursday evening, August 8, 2024, we’re seeing the first signs of change as monsoon rains make their way into the Las Vegas Valley. Late Thursday, rain showers began to move through the northeast part of the valley, and by around 9:30 p.m., we saw a moderate cell pop up between Nellis Air Force Base and Apex.
These showers have been scattered, but they’ve already started to make an impact, with a small but measurable 0.12 inches of rain recorded near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway by 10 p.m.As the night progressed, a narrow band of rain started to approach the Strip and then moved towards UNLV and the Las Vegas airport. It’s been a pretty dynamic weather situation, with isolated showers also touching Mount Charleston earlier in the day. Meteorologist Ashley Nickerson noted that an outflow of wind from storms in Utah could ramp up wind speeds in the valley to around 30 mph after 8 p.m.
tonight. So, if you're out and about, keep an eye out for gusty winds and potential showers.Looking ahead, the weather service is forecasting a continuation of these monsoon conditions through the weekend. According to meteorologist John Adair, we’re going to see a good amount of moisture in the atmosphere, which should help keep things a bit cooler than the intense heat we’ve been enduring.
“We’ll add a little more moisture tomorrow through Saturday before starting to dry out on Sunday,” Adair explained. He also pointed out that we can expect temperatures to stay below 110 degrees, which, considering recent highs, is a welcome change. For Friday, expect a similar weather pattern with a 20 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms starting after 11 a.m. Temperatures are expected to reach around 107 degrees.
Saturday’s forecast suggests a 30 percent chance of storms, with the likelihood of rain dropping to 20 percent Saturday night. By Sunday, the chance of rain will be even slimmer, but don’t be surprised if a few lingering showers make an appearance. This shift in the weather comes as a bit of a relief from the extreme heat that’s been gripping the region. With Death Valley recently setting records for the hottest month ever recorded on Earth, and other cities in California outstripping Phoenix as the hottest city in the U.S., it’s clear that the heat has been relentless.
But with these monsoon rains, it seems like there might finally be a break from the sweltering temperatures. The impact of the rains might be a mixed bag. While the cooler temperatures are definitely a plus, the potential for sudden storms and gusty winds means that outdoor plans could be disrupted. However, the rains could also help alleviate some of the dust issues that have been exacerbated by recent storms, which blew dust into the Las Vegas Valley earlier this week. So, while it’s always a bit of a gamble with monsoon season, it looks like Las Vegas will be experiencing a refreshing change of pace from the extreme heat.
