Napheesa Collier Shines as Lynx Secure Playoff Spot with Win Over Fever
The Minnesota Lynx secured their spot in the 2024 WNBA playoffs with an impressive 90-80 victory over the Indiana Fever, led by a stellar performance from Napheesa Collier, who scored a season-high 31 points. The Lynx, who are currently having one of their best seasons, showcased their strength, particularly in the first and fourth quarters, to clinch their 23rd win of the season.
Saturday night was a memorable one for Minnesota, not only because of their playoff-clinching win but also due to the retirement ceremony for Lynx legend Maya Moore’s jersey. This special occasion seemed to inspire the team, as they roared out to a significant early lead in the first quarter, with six successful three-pointers setting the tone. By halftime, however, Indiana had fought back valiantly, cutting the deficit to just one point after outscoring the Lynx 28-16 in the second quarter.

Indiana, which has been in strong form with seven wins in their last nine games, aimed to secure their own playoff berth. Caitlin Clark, the Fever's star rookie, played a key role in their comeback efforts. Clark, who recently set a WNBA rookie record for the fastest to 500 points and 200 assists in a season, finished the game with 23 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. However, she also committed seven turnovers, a stat that ultimately hindered the Fever’s momentum.
Despite Indiana’s efforts, the Lynx regained control in the second half. The Fever managed to narrow the gap to just three points in the fourth quarter, but a decisive 12-0 run by Minnesota ensured that they would emerge victorious. Alongside Collier’s outstanding performance, Kayla McBride contributed 19 points and four assists, while Bridget Carleton added 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, providing crucial support for the Lynx.
The win improves Minnesota's record to 23-8, making them the third team to secure a spot in this year’s playoffs, following the New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun. This victory also marked the Lynx's sixth consecutive win and further solidified their status as a top contender in the league.
On the other hand, the Fever, now 13-16, still remain in the playoff picture as the No. 7 seed, despite this being their first loss since the Olympic break. Indiana will look to bounce back as they finish off their two-game road trip against the Atlanta Dream on Monday night. Meanwhile, the Lynx will travel to face the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, continuing their quest for WNBA dominance.
This game was not just a testament to the Lynx’s resilience and skill but also a showcase of Napheesa Collier's leadership on the court. As the playoffs approach, Minnesota looks poised to make a deep run, driven by their star players and a strong team dynamic.
