New GM Don Waddell Transforms Blue Jackets Culture with Zero Tolerance for Losing
As the Columbus Blue Jackets embark on a new chapter, General Manager Don Waddell is making it clear that a cultural overhaul is in full swing. Since stepping into his role on May 28, Waddell has been reshaping the team’s ethos and operations, sending a strong message that losing is no longer an option.
Waddell, who took over from Jarmo Kekalainen, brings a fresh perspective to a franchise that has struggled to find consistent success. Under Kekalainen’s leadership, the Blue Jackets had a mixed record—410 wins, 362 losses, and 97 ties over eleven seasons. Despite making the playoffs five times, the team advanced past the first round only once, a statistic that Waddell aims to change.
In a recent interview with SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, Waddell expressed his dissatisfaction with the previous culture. “Losing was acceptable here, and losing is not acceptable,” he stated firmly. He emphasized that the Blue Jackets must shift their mindset from merely aiming to win games to striving for the ultimate prize: the Stanley Cup. “We have a long way to go, but our goal every year should be to win the Stanley Cup,” he added.

Waddell’s commitment to changing the team’s trajectory is evident in the significant moves he has made. The Blue Jackets ended last season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a disappointing 27-43-12 record, marking their fourth consecutive missed playoff appearance. The previous season was plagued by challenges, including the premature resignation of head coach Mike Babcock and injuries to key players like Boone Jenner, Patrik Laine, and rookie Adam Fantilli.
To address these issues, Waddell has brought in Dean Evason as the new head coach. Evason, who was previously with the Minnesota Wild, is known for his strong leadership and ability to foster a winning environment. Waddell’s decision was influenced by Evason’s passion for the Blue Jackets and his readiness to hold the team accountable.
Waddell’s strategy also includes bolstering the roster with experienced players. Veteran defenseman Jack Johnson and center Sean Monahan have been added, with the latter known for his leadership qualities from his time with the Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, and Winnipeg Jets. The addition of Monahan, in particular, is expected to provide both on-ice skill and vital locker room presence.
The team’s changes extend beyond new hires. Patrik Laine was traded to the Montreal Canadiens, a move that freed up significant cap space. This trade, along with other roster adjustments, reflects Waddell’s desire to build a team that aligns with his high standards.
