Ons Jabeur Withdraws from US Open Due to Shoulder Injury

In a heartfelt announcement, tennis star Ons Jabeur has revealed that she will not be participating in the 2024 US Open, citing a persistent shoulder injury as the reason for her withdrawal. The decision comes just hours after she was drawn to face the unseeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova in the first round, marking a disappointing turn of events for the Tunisian athlete.

Jabeur, who reached the US Open final in 2022, had been hopeful of making a strong comeback at Flushing Meadows. However, despite her determination to compete, her ongoing shoulder issues proved too significant to overcome in time for the tournament. The 29-year-old expressed her deep regret in a poignant Instagram post, where she candidly shared her struggles and sought understanding from her fans.

“I am truly sad to announce that my shoulder won’t recover in time for the US Open,” Jabeur wrote. “I feel I need to give 100 percent, and today it’s not possible yet.” She reflected on the tough year she has endured, emphasizing the importance of finding a silver lining even in challenging times. “Life has ups and downs, but sometimes in the very negative moments we all need to find the positive in it,” she continued. “This year has been very tough for me, but I know somewhere the light is there.”

Jabeur's journey through 2024 has been fraught with difficulties. Having been a runner-up at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022, she faced further setbacks the following year, including a painful loss to Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon, which she described as the “most painful loss” of her career. This year, her form and fitness issues have seen her ranking slip to 17th, and she missed the Paris Olympics due to a knee problem. The US Open will be the first Grand Slam she has missed since the 2022 Australian Open.

In her Instagram post, Jabeur also expressed gratitude towards her supporters. “I keep smiling like I always do because I am grateful for my life, my family, my sponsors, and the fans that have always supported me,” she said. She urged her followers to be kind and understanding, whether they were wishing her a speedy recovery or questioning her decision. “If you are reading this post and wanting to wish me a speedy recovery, I truly appreciate it and cherish it. And if you are here to question my choices and my team, please find a little kindness in your heart,” she added.

As a result of Jabeur’s withdrawal, Elise Mertens will take her place in the tournament as the 33rd seed. The US Open organizers made the announcement on social media, expressing their support for Jabeur and wishing her a swift recovery.

With Jabeur’s departure from the tournament, the tennis world will undoubtedly miss the competitive spirit and flair she brings to the court. Fans and fellow players alike will be watching closely as she navigates her recovery and plans her return to the game.
