Paris Prepares for a Spectacular Paralympic Games
As the world turns its eyes to Paris, excitement is building for the much-anticipated Paralympic Games, set to commence on August 28th. With over 4,400 athletes from around the globe preparing to showcase their talents, this year’s Games promise to be a celebration of resilience, skill, and unparalleled sportsmanship.
The French capital, fresh from hosting the Olympics, will once again serve as a vibrant backdrop for these remarkable competitions. The elegance of Ch'steau de Versailles will continue to host para equestrian events, while the Grand Palais will transition from its Olympic fencing events to wheelchair fencing. The Invalides will remain a hub of competition, now featuring para archery. International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons highlighted the significance of these venues, emphasizing that Paris’s embrace of the Games symbolizes a grand gesture of support and inclusion for the athletes.

Among the exciting additions to this year’s Paralympics are 10 new medal events aimed at increasing opportunities for female athletes and those with high-support needs. With approximately 2 million out of 2.5 million tickets already sold, anticipation is high, and this will be the second highest attendance for a Paralympic Games, just behind London 2012.
The Paralympic flame, having been lit in Stoke Mandeville—the birthplace of the Games—has traveled across England and under the English Channel to ignite the cauldron in Paris. This symbolic journey reflects the spirit and unity of the Paralympic movement.
As the Games kick off, several high-profile athletes are set to defend their titles. Indian para shooter Avani Lekhara, who won gold at the Tokyo Paralympics, will aim to retain her 10-meter air rifle gold. American Oksana Masters, a multi-sport specialist, will seek to add to her impressive tally of medals. Meanwhile, Egyptian para powerlifter Sherif Osman is gunning for his fourth gold medal, and Italian fencer Bebe Vio will vie for her third consecutive gold in wheelchair fencing.
New stories and heroes will emerge, including visually impaired Italian sprinter Valentina Petrillo, who will make history as the first transgender woman to compete in the Paralympics. American swimmer Ali Truwit, who is competing after a shark attack, and 16-year-old Czech swimmer David Kratochvil, who transitioned from ice hockey to swimming, are among the many inspiring figures set to make their mark.
