Rangers vs. White Sox: Rain Suspends Game, Doubleheader Set for Wednesday
In an unexpected turn of events on August 27, 2024, the highly anticipated game between the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox was abruptly suspended after just four pitches due to an unseasonal rainstorm. The game, which was set to take place at Guaranteed Rate Field, began at 7:10 p.m. CT. However, the action came to a halt a mere minute later when rain started to pour, forcing a delay at 7:11 p.m. CT.
The game was initially anticipated to be played without any weather interruptions, as the forecast had predicted rain to hold off until later in the evening. Yet, as Garrett Crochet, the White Sox's starting pitcher, prepared to face Rangers’ batters, dark clouds swiftly enveloped the sky, leading to the early suspension. Crochet, who had thrown only four pitches, saw the game called off at a 2-2 count.

Rangers' second baseman Marcus Semien expressed surprise over the sudden change in weather. “I was surprised that it rained, because usually if you know rain's coming, you don't start it,” Semien said. “It is what it is. We get another night off. It's our third night in a row off. We'll be ready to go tomorrow.” He also humorously noted the confusion over the timing of the rain, which had been forecasted for later in the evening.
With the game suspended, it has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader set for Wednesday, August 28, starting at 4:10 p.m. CT. The first game will resume with Chris Flexen opening for the White Sox. The second game will commence approximately 30 to 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first, but not earlier than 7:10 p.m. CT. Fans holding tickets for the originally scheduled game at 7:10 p.m. CT are advised that they can attend both games of the doubleheader. Those with tickets and parking passes will see their purchases credited or refunded accordingly.
Looking ahead, the White Sox will also need to adjust their pitching plans. Chris Flexen is slated to start the resumed game, with a bullpen game anticipated for the nightcap. The Rangers will have Andrew Heaney, originally scheduled to start the suspended game, ready for action. Jack Leiter, expected to pitch the second game, is anticipated to make his fourth career start.
As both teams prepare for this unusual doubleheader, the White Sox are struggling with a dismal record of 31-101, having lost their last four games. The Rangers, meanwhile, are looking to bounce back from their own two-game losing streak. The makeup games will be critical for both teams as they look to turn their fortunes around.
Stay tuned for what promises to be an action-packed day of baseball as these two teams resume their battle on the diamond.
