SeaWorld Gold Coast Rescue: 13 Trapped Riders Freed After 90 Minutes
In a dramatic turn of events at SeaWorld on the Gold Coast, 13 people were rescued after being trapped midair on the Vortex ride for over 90 minutes. This incident occurred on August 27, 2024, and highlights both the resilience of emergency teams and the challenges faced by amusement park operators.
The Vortex, a popular attraction at SeaWorld, experienced a stoppage due to a sensor communication fault. This malfunction left the ride’s cars suspended midair, leaving guests in a precarious situation. Fortunately, the park's staff acted swiftly. Bikash Randhawa, Chief Operating Officer of Village Roadshow Theme Parks, assured the public that all riders were safe throughout the ordeal. According to Randhawa, the park maintained constant communication with the trapped guests and an on-site nurse conducted welfare checks as they awaited rescue.

The response involved a coordinated effort between SeaWorld's engineering team and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES). The engineers manually lowered the ride to its home position, allowing the guests to safely disembark. QFES was on standby to assist if necessary, but fortunately, their help was not required. Randhawa praised the preparedness and training of both SeaWorld’s team and the QFES, emphasizing that the incident showcased the effectiveness of their emergency protocols.
Interestingly, this incident is not isolated. Just two weeks prior, on August 22, 2024, another SeaWorld ride, the Leviathan rollercoaster, also faced a stoppage due to a ride sensor error. Passengers on that occasion were stuck for about an hour before being safely evacuated via emergency access points.
These events have sparked a discussion about the safety measures and maintenance procedures in place at amusement parks. SeaWorld has reassured the public that their rides are equipped with rigorous safety systems designed to handle such emergencies. The park emphasized that ride stoppages are a part of their safety protocols, ensuring that systems are functioning correctly and prioritizing the safety of guests.
The Gold Coast incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of amusement park rides and the critical importance of rapid, effective response measures. As SeaWorld continues to address these challenges, the focus remains on ensuring guest safety and refining emergency procedures to handle future situations more efficiently.
