Warriors Lock Down Stephen Curry with $62.6M Extension Through 2027
In a significant move that underscores their commitment to their star player, the Golden State Warriors have secured Stephen Curry with a one-year contract extension valued at $62.6 million. This extension, confirmed by Curry's agent Jeff Austin and reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, will keep Curry with the Warriors through the 2026-27 NBA season. This decision comes amidst a period of considerable transition for the Warriors.
Curry, who has been a cornerstone of the Warriors' success, had two years left on his previous four-year, $215.4 million deal signed in August 2021. Due to the NBA’s over-38 rule in the current collective bargaining agreement, Curry could only sign a one-year extension at this time. The rule aims to prevent teams from offering lengthy contracts to players over the age of 38, thus preserving salary cap integrity. Curry, who turns 38 on March 14, 2026, will be classified as being in his age-37 season for the duration of this extension.

The timing of this extension is crucial for the Warriors, who have had a whirlwind offseason. They began by parting ways with Klay Thompson, who joined the Dallas Mavericks, and opted to waive Chris Paul instead of committing to his $30 million salary for the upcoming season. Despite these changes, the Warriors' general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has been proactive in reshaping the roster. The team has brought in players like Kyle Anderson, De'Anthony Melton, and Buddy Hield. While these additions come with their own set of uncertainties, they have the potential to enhance the Warriors' playoff prospects if they perform well.
Curry’s performance last season further justified this significant investment. He continued to showcase his elite skills, averaging 26.4 points per game with an impressive 40.8% shooting from three-point range, along with 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds. His exceptional play earned him a spot on both the All-NBA and All-Star teams for the 10th time. Additionally, he was honored with the 2023-24 Clutch Player of the Year award, leading the league in clutch points, field goals, and three-pointers.
Despite Curry's individual brilliance, the Warriors faced challenges last season. They missed the playoffs with a 46-36 record and were eliminated in the play-in tournament by the Sacramento Kings, marking their first absence from the postseason since the 2020-21 season.
By extending Curry’s contract, the Warriors not only demonstrate their faith in his continued excellence but also their intention to keep him as a central figure as they navigate these roster changes. Curry’s presence ensures that the Warriors will remain competitive and provides a solid foundation as the team looks to rebound and reestablish themselves as a dominant force in the league.
