In a captivating display of T20 cricket, the West Indies clinched a remarkable victory over South Africa in the first T20I of their three-match series. After a delayed start due to heavy rain, South Africa opted to bat first. The West Indies bowlers made an immediate impact, reducing South Africa to a precarious 42 for 5 within the first eight overs. It was a relentless display of pace and precision from Matthew Forde, who delivered career-best figures of 3 for 27, and Shamar Joseph, who also chipped in with crucial wickets. South Africa's innings was steadied by a resilient partnership between Patrick Kruger and Tristan Stubbs, who combined for 71 runs off 50 balls. Stubbs continued his assault, joining forces with Bjorn Fortuin to add 60 runs from just 25 balls, propelling the total to 174 for 7.

In response, the West Indies’ chase was spearheaded by Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze, who set the tone with an explosive 75-run powerplay. Athanaze's aggressive 40 off 30 balls and Hope’s 51 off 36 balls laid a solid foundation. Nicholas Pooran then took charge, delivering a breathtaking unbeaten 65 from just 26 balls. His knock included the fastest fifty in his T20I career, reached in just 20 balls. Pooran’s performance was pivotal, as he dispatched South Africa’s bowlers with four consecutive sixes off Nandre Burger, effectively dismantling the visitors' hopes.
