What’s Open and Closed for Labor Day 2024: Your Guide to Services and Shops
As Labor Day approaches on September 2, 2024, you might be wondering about the status of various services and businesses. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate what will be open and closed on this holiday.
Firstly, let’s talk about retail and services. Major shopping centers and large supermarkets will be closed for Labor Day, so if you were planning a big grocery run, you might need to adjust your plans. However, don't worry if you just need the basics. Small grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, and pharmacies will remain open to cater to your urgent needs. For those looking to purchase wine or spirits, most branches of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) will be closed, except for those located within public markets. SAQ Express stores will keep their regular hours.

Dining options and cultural attractions will be available to the public. Restaurants, bars, and public markets in Montreal—like the Atwater, Jean-Talon, and Maisonneuve markets—will be open. Museums within Montreal’s Espace pour la Vie, including the Biodôme, Biosphère, Insectarium, Botanical Garden, and Planetarium, will welcome visitors. In Quebec City, sports facilities will operate if scheduled activities are planned, though all libraries will be closed. Parks Canada sites throughout Quebec will be open for visitors as usual.
When it comes to public services, most will be unavailable. Municipal offices, banks, and Canada Post will be closed. Government services such as those provided by Service Canada and the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) will not be operational. Passport offices will also be closed. Garbage and recycling collections in Montreal and Quebec City will proceed as scheduled, and ecocentres will be open.
Public transportation will experience some changes. In Montreal, public transit services will be available but on a Sunday schedule, so expect reduced frequency. Buses operated by the STM will follow modified schedules, and the REM will run on a Sunday timetable. Exo services will be adjusted as well. In Quebec City, buses will also follow a Sunday schedule, but the Couche-Tard service will not be in operation. Other transit agencies across the province, such as STL, RTL, and STS, will run on a Saturday schedule, while STO will operate on a Sunday schedule.
Whether you’re planning to run errands, enjoy some leisure time, or explore local attractions, knowing what’s open and closed will help you make the most of your Labor Day. Enjoy your holiday!
