X (Formerly Twitter) Resumes Service After Global Outage: Key Details
In a surprising turn of events, the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced a significant outage affecting users worldwide on August 14, 2024. This disruption impacted both the web and app versions of the platform, leading to widespread frustration and confusion among users.
Reports of the outage began surfacing around 12:45 PM IST, with the situation escalating until it peaked at approximately 1:00 PM IST. According to Downdetector, a platform specializing in tracking online service disruptions, the outage was most severe for users in India. Around 65% of Indian users reported difficulties accessing X on the web, while about 28% faced issues with the app. Globally, similar problems were noted, with approximately 65% of users affected on the website and 29% experiencing issues with the app.
During this outage, users encountered a range of problems. Many were unable to access posts or use the search function on X, receiving error messages like "Something went wrong, but don’t fret — let’s give it another shot." The outage led to an influx of posts and queries from users attempting to understand what was happening.

Interestingly, despite the widespread disruption, some members of the Times of India Tech team reported being able to access the platform intermittently during the outage. This anomaly highlights the uneven nature of the disruption and suggests that the extent of the outage varied by region and user.
At the time of writing, X appears to have restored its services. The exact cause of the outage remains unclear, and the company has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the incident. However, speculation has been rife about a potential distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. On August 13, a scheduled interview between former US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk was delayed due to technical issues, which Musk later attributed to a possible DDoS attack.
A DDoS attack involves overwhelming a server or network with excessive traffic from a network of compromised devices, known as a botnet. These attacks can severely disrupt normal operations, causing widespread service outages.
For now, users of X can resume their activities as the platform's services seem to be back online. The outage serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of digital platforms to various forms of cyber-attacks and the importance of maintaining robust systems to handle unexpected disruptions.
Stay tuned to the latest updates and technical news as more information about the cause and impact of this outage becomes available.
