Aaron Rodgers' Return Highlights and Struggles in Jets' Defeat to 49ers
In a highly anticipated return, Aaron Rodgers took the field for the New York Jets after an Achilles injury curtailed his 2023 season. Despite the dramatic buildup, the game ended with a 32-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on September 9, 2024. The evening showcased a mix of promise and frustration for the veteran quarterback, who was eager to make his mark in his new Jets uniform.
Rodgers, who had only managed four snaps before his injury last year, was back to face the 49ers with high hopes. His return was marked by a notable first half where he displayed glimpses of his renowned playmaking ability. Despite these flashes of brilliance, Rodgers struggled with consistency. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 167 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. The interception came in the third quarter, deflected by Deommodore Lenoir into the hands of linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and it came at a crucial moment as the Jets were trying to mount a comeback. Rodgers acknowledged his performance, noting, “I can play better. I missed a couple of throws... There were some opportunities I’d like to have back.”
Rodgers’ return wasn’t without its positive moments. His first touchdown pass in 610 days to Lazard was a notable highlight. Yet, the Jets' offense struggled to find rhythm throughout the game. The team’s inability to sustain drives, compounded by frequent three-and-outs, limited Rodgers’ opportunities to settle into a groove. The Jets ran just 37 offensive plays with Rodgers, an issue compounded by the 49ers' effective containment of Breece Hall and the running game.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh reflected on the game, emphasizing the need for improvement, particularly in establishing a more consistent offensive flow. “We just didn’t see the field as much as we’d like,” Saleh said. “Our running game is going to be fine, but we only ran 49 plays today. We never got a chance to establish what we’re trying to establish.”
For Rodgers, the game was a bittersweet return to form. While he expressed gratitude for being back on the field, the loss and the struggles that came with it were evident. “It’s been a while,” Rodgers said. “I felt great, a lot of gratitude just to be back in pads. So many people helped me get back to this spot so I’m really thankful.”
As the Jets look to build on this performance, the focus will be on finding greater consistency and integration within the offense. Rodgers' return was a step forward, but there remains work to be done to fully realize the potential of this high-profile acquisition.
