Andrew McQualter Appointed as West Coast Eagles Coach
In a major move for the 2024 AFL season, Andrew McQualter has been named the new senior coach of the West Coast Eagles. After months of anticipation and a rigorous selection process, McQualter emerged as the frontrunner, beating out other high-caliber contenders such as Collingwood assistant Hayden Skipworth and Geelong's Steven King. McQualter, who was a former assistant at both Richmond and Melbourne, has signed a three-year deal, taking over from former Eagles coach Adam Simpson.
McQualter’s journey to this role has been nothing short of remarkable. His coaching experience began after an impressive playing career, which saw him feature for St Kilda in the 2009 and 2010 AFL Grand Finals. His shift into coaching saw him contribute to Richmond’s premiership success as an integral part of Damien Hardwick's team, where he held various roles, including midfield and stoppages coach, and later took charge of the forward line. His temporary role as caretaker coach for Richmond in 2023, following Hardwick's departure, also showcased his leadership potential as he guided the Tigers to seven wins in their last 13 games.

At West Coast, McQualter inherits a team that has been struggling in recent years, with a rebuilding task ahead. The Eagles have been mired in the bottom three on the ladder for the past three seasons, so McQualter’s experience in developing young players will be crucial as the team looks to turn its fortunes around. The Eagles are known for being a financial powerhouse in the AFL, which will provide McQualter with the resources and support necessary to attract key talent, including potential trades from his former club Richmond.
McQualter’s ties to Richmond could play a significant role in shaping West Coast’s future, as reports suggest that Richmond's Liam Baker and Jack Graham are on the Eagles’ radar. Baker, who has already requested a trade back to Western Australia, is expected to nominate West Coast as his preferred destination. This connection further strengthens McQualter’s position as he looks to reshape the team’s roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Speaking on his appointment, McQualter expressed his excitement, stating, "I have been working towards this moment for the last 10 years and I’m thrilled to be appointed as coach of the West Coast Eagles. There is some exciting young talent at the club with a mix of outstanding players, and I couldn’t be more excited to get over there and get to work with them." His enthusiasm to lead the Eagles and his vision for the team’s future has already ignited optimism among fans and management alike.
West Coast CEO Don Pyke echoed these sentiments, saying, "Andrew has the professional and personal qualities and experience required to guide our team. We believe he possesses the credentials and vision needed to help us make strong progress." With McQualter at the helm, the Eagles are looking forward to a fresh start, hoping his leadership will bring a resurgence to one of the AFL's most storied clubs.
McQualter’s appointment marks a new chapter for the West Coast Eagles, and the journey ahead will undoubtedly be challenging. But with his coaching acumen and vision for the future, McQualter seems poised to steer the club towards a brighter and more competitive future in the AFL.
