Ben Dwarshuis Steps Up for Australian ODI Debut Amid Injury Crisis
In a dramatic turn of events, left-arm bowler Ben Dwarshuis is set to make his One Day International (ODI) debut for Australia as they face a challenging series opener against England at Trent Bridge. The Australian squad is currently battling a significant injury crisis, which has left them with a severely depleted lineup.
With key players Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood sidelined due to illness, and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis also injured, Australia's options have been drastically reduced. Additionally, Jake Fraser-McGurk is struggling with hamstring tightness, further complicating the selection process. This unfortunate series of events has meant that only 12 of the original 17 players are available for today's match.
As a result, Dwarshuis, who was added to the squad only last week due to injuries to Xavier Bartlett and Riley Meredith, is stepping into the limelight. The 30-year-old New South Welshman has been impressive in domestic cricket, making a name for himself with the Sydney Sixers and during a brief stint with the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred. His ODI cap No. 248 was presented to him by state teammate Steve Smith before the game.

The Australian team, led by Mitch Marsh who is captaining in Maxwell's absence, will see a slightly reshuffled lineup. Marsh will open the batting alongside Travis Head, who has been in exceptional form in recent T20 matches. Steve Smith will slot in at first drop, with Cameron Green coming in at No. 4—a position where he showcased his potential with an unbeaten 62 in a recent T20 match. Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey, stepping in for Inglis, will also be key figures.
With the absence of Maxwell, allrounder Matt Short is set to provide much-needed support in the middle overs, alongside Adam Zampa, who is playing his 100th ODI. Zampa will be a crucial figure in Australia's bowling attack, supported by Green and Aaron Hardie, while Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott will cover the remaining pace overs.
England, meanwhile, have introduced some fresh faces of their own. Young allrounder Jacob Bethell, who impressed in a recent T20 match, and Test wicketkeeper Jamie Smith are among those making an appearance. With Harry Brook stepping in as captain due to Jos Buttler’s calf injury, and Matthew Potts replacing the unwell Reece Topley, England's squad is also experiencing changes.
Australia's injury woes have not only affected the current ODI series but also put a spotlight on the depth and resilience of their squad. Regular captain Pat Cummins remains at home to focus on conditioning ahead of the upcoming Test series against India, adding to the team's challenges. Despite these setbacks, Australia aims to extend their impressive 12-game winning streak in the 50-over format and continue their unbeaten run against England.
As the series unfolds, Dwarshuis’s debut will be closely watched, with Australian fans hoping his presence will help navigate through this challenging period. The first ODI starts at 9.30 pm AEST, and the team will look to rise to the occasion despite their injuries and lineup changes.
