Burning Man 2024: Pyramid Lake Police Warn Attendees About Unauthorized EV Charging
Burning Man 2024 has once again drawn thousands of free-spirited individuals to the Nevada desert for a week of radical self-expression, art, and community. However, as the event winds down, some attendees face an unexpected challenge: recharging their electric vehicles (EVs) for the journey home. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has issued a stern reminder to departing festival-goers: do not plug your vehicles into the tribe’s infrastructure without permission.
The Pyramid Lake Police Department recently took to social media to address this issue, sharing a photo of an incident where a Burner was caught illegally charging their EV at a tribal building. The department’s message was clear: “If you have an electric vehicle and you did not plan ahead while leaving Burning Man, it is not acceptable to plug into a Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe building and charge your vehicle. Should your battery run out, contact a local tow company to move it somewhere it can charge legally.”

This warning comes as the festival, which ran from August 25th to September 2nd, 2024, concludes. Located in the remote Black Rock Desert, Burning Man is not exactly in close proximity to major urban centers, and the journey out of the desert can be a logistical challenge, particularly for those with electric vehicles. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s reservation lies between the festival site and Reno, making it a convenient but unauthorized pit stop for weary travelers.
The tribe's infrastructure is not equipped to handle the influx of EVs seeking power, and unauthorized use can put a strain on local resources. For this reason, the Pyramid Lake Police are urging attendees to plan their trips accordingly and respect the tribe’s property. With the rise in EV ownership, it’s a reminder that the convenience of charging your vehicle should not come at the expense of local communities.
For those leaving the festival, the message is simple: plan ahead. Ensure your vehicle has enough charge to get you to a legal charging station or make arrangements with a tow company if necessary. Burning Man is an event known for its principles of self-reliance and respect for others, and these principles extend to the communities that surround the festival.
As Burning Man continues to evolve, issues like these highlight the importance of being mindful of the impact the event has on nearby communities. While the festival promotes freedom and creativity, it also emphasizes responsibility, and that includes respecting the rights and resources of others.
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s message is a crucial reminder for all festival-goers: Burning Man may be about pushing boundaries, but respecting the boundaries of others is just as important.
