Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Auston Matthews Lead TSN's Top 50 NHL Players List
The release of TSN’s Top 50 NHL Players list for the 2024-25 season has sparked excitement among hockey fans, as Connor McDavid continues his reign at the top. For the eighth consecutive season, McDavid takes the No. 1 spot, cementing his status as the best player in the NHL. Despite a relatively quieter 2023-24 regular season, where McDavid netted 32 goals—half of his career-high from the previous year—he silenced any doubters with a record-breaking performance in the playoffs. With 100 assists in the regular season and a Conn Smythe Trophy to his name, McDavid's dominance is unquestionable. As he heads into his 10th NHL season, McDavid is on the verge of another major milestone: 1,000 career points, needing just 18 more to reach that mark.
Close behind McDavid is Colorado Avalanche captain Nathan MacKinnon, ranked No. 2 on TSN's list. MacKinnon had an extraordinary season last year, finishing with a career-high 140 points, including 51 goals. His impressive consistency, having nearly doubled his point-per-game average over the past few seasons, makes him one of the most lethal players in the league. MacKinnon also won both the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award, further solidifying his place as an elite player.

At No. 3 is Auston Matthews, who came close to becoming the first player since 1992-93 to score 70 goals in a season. Matthews' offensive firepower is unmatched, but his contribution goes beyond scoring. His strong defensive play is reflected in his plus-122 rating over the past five seasons, edging out even MacKinnon in that department.
Leon Draisaitl (No. 4) and Nikita Kucherov (No. 5) round out the top five. Draisaitl, McDavid’s teammate in Edmonton, continues to be one of the league’s most productive forwards, while Kucherov remains a creative force on the ice, finishing last season with an impressive 144 points, aided by his playmaking prowess.
This year’s TSN list also saw some significant changes. Alex Ovechkin, known as "The Great 8," fell out of the Top 50 for the first time since 2010, although he remains on the hunt to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record. Meanwhile, up-and-coming stars like Quinn Hughes (No. 8) and Mikko Rantanen (No. 10) continue to rise through the ranks.
Goalies also had a strong presence on the list, with Igor Shesterkin (No. 17) being the highest-ranked netminder. Russia led the pack with three goaltenders making the list, while Canada was represented by 17 players overall, showcasing its continued dominance in hockey.
With so many standout players, TSN’s Top 50 is a thrilling preview of the upcoming season, highlighting the stars who are set to shape the future of the NHL.
