Controversy at the US Open: A Replay Error and Its Impact on Kalinskaya vs. Haddad Maia
At the U.S. Open, a contentious error involving video replay during a third-round match between Anna Kalinskaya and Beatriz Haddad Maia has sparked significant debate. On the night of September 1, 2024, a critical mistake occurred when the chair umpire, Miriam Bley, was not shown all relevant replay angles by the video review official. The incident unfolded early in the match, precisely 11 minutes into the contest at Louis Armstrong Stadium. With Kalinskaya, the 15th-seeded Russian player, leading 2-0, and the 22nd-seeded Brazilian Haddad Maia serving at deuce, a key moment arose. Kalinskaya executed a drop shot, which Haddad Maia attempted to reach. The ball appeared to land on the court just as Haddad Maia made contact with it. Kalinskaya, seemingly distracted and possibly thinking there was an issue with Haddad Maia’s reply, missed the ball with a subsequent swing.

Kalinskaya challenged the call using the video review system, introduced at the U.S. Open last year to handle such disputes. This system is designed to clarify issues like extra bounces or whether a ball touched a player's racket before crossing the net. Unfortunately, the replay angle provided to Bley only confirmed that there was no double bounce, but did not address whether the ball had hit Haddad Maia’s side of the court before crossing the net. This critical detail was missing, and as a result, the point was awarded to Haddad Maia.
USTA spokesman Brendan McIntyre later acknowledged the error, explaining that the chair umpire had not seen all the necessary footage before making her decision. McIntyre stated, “After the review was complete, an additional angle was seen on the broadcast. The chair did not see this footage prior to making the call.” This situation has led to the USTA reinforcing its guidelines to ensure that all relevant replay angles are provided to officials in the future.
The error had an immediate impact on the match. Despite the delay and the controversy surrounding the call, Haddad Maia went on to win the point and subsequently the game. The crowd's reaction was mixed, with some booing the decision and the ensuing process. Haddad Maia capitalized on the momentum, eventually securing a decisive victory with scores of 6-3, 6-1.
