Dalvin Cook Impresses Cowboys' Coach Mike McCarthy With "Phenomenal Feet"
As Dalvin Cook continues to settle into his role with the Dallas Cowboys, the buzz around him is growing, especially after a recent compliment from head coach Mike McCarthy. Cook, a four-time Pro Bowl running back, signed with the Cowboys' practice squad late last August. Despite not being activated for the team’s season opener against the Cleveland Browns, Cook’s presence in practice has caught McCarthy’s attention.
McCarthy was all praise during a midweek press conference, describing Cook’s performance in practice as impressive, highlighting his "phenomenal feet." The coach mentioned that Cook has quickly integrated into the team and is fitting in well with the rest of the roster. Although it remains unclear if Cook will be promoted to the active roster for the Cowboys’ upcoming Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints, McCarthy expressed optimism about the running back’s potential.

After an offseason where Cook trained independently, McCarthy believes the key to unlocking his full potential lies in getting more practice reps with the team. "If you look at his time frame and how much time he’s been here, I think the biggest thing is hopefully we can get a full week’s work this week and next week,” McCarthy remarked. He added that this additional practice time will benefit Cook and the other late free agent signings as they adapt to the team’s systems.
While the Cowboys’ running game didn’t struggle in their Week 1 victory over the Browns, there’s always room for improvement. Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn combined for an average of 3.7 yards per carry, but Cook’s potential return to form could provide a much-needed boost. Cook’s performance last season with the Jets and Ravens was below his usual standard, with an average of just 3.2 yards per carry, but a healthy offseason has left him eager to prove he still has what it takes.
The Cowboys can activate Cook from the practice squad for up to three games before they must make a decision about either signing him to the full roster or placing him on waivers. McCarthy remains optimistic, saying, "Dalvin looks great. Fits in. I’m excited about him."
Whether or not Cook will make his Cowboys debut in Week 2 or later remains to be seen, but the compliments from McCarthy suggest that when Cook does take the field, he could bring a fresh spark to the Cowboys’ running game. For now, the fans will have to wait and see how the situation unfolds, but one thing is clear—Dalvin Cook’s future in Dallas looks promising.
