E Ink Wins Manufacturer of the Year at Massachusetts Manufacturing Awards
E Ink, the global leader in ePaper technology, has been honored with the prestigious "Manufacturer of the Year" award at the 9th Annual Massachusetts Manufacturing Awards. Held on September 25, 2024, at Gillette Stadium, this award ceremony brought together leading manufacturers from across the state, celebrating their innovation and contributions to Massachusetts' strong manufacturing ecosystem.
E Ink’s recognition comes from the Legislative Manufacturing Caucus, which acknowledged the company for its cutting-edge production of ePaper displays. E Ink has been an active manufacturer in Massachusetts since 2009, with facilities in Billerica and South Hadley. These sites are pivotal to the company’s development of proprietary ink and film products, which form the backbone of its ePaper technology. One of the key products manufactured in the state is E Ink’s black-and-white display technology, used in millions of eReaders, electronic shelf labels, and transportation signs worldwide. The company's products even made their way into the automotive industry, with the world’s first color-changing car produced in partnership with BMW.

Paul Apen, E Ink’s US Chief Operating Officer, emphasized Massachusetts' crucial role in the advanced manufacturing sector. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts between government and industry, praising leaders like Speaker Mariano, Senate President Spilka, and Governor Healey for their investments in the state’s manufacturing future. Apen reaffirmed E Ink’s commitment to innovation, job creation, and growth within Massachusetts.
The Legislative Manufacturing Caucus, formed in 2014, works closely with companies like E Ink to boost training programs, foster innovation, and support apprenticeships in the manufacturing sector. This commitment is further highlighted by events such as the Massachusetts Manufacturing Mash-Up, which took place in October in collaboration with organizations like MassRobotics and The Center for Advanced Manufacturing.
Beyond its technological advancements, E Ink is also deeply committed to sustainability. The company is aiming for ambitious environmental goals, including achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040 and sourcing 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. As of December 2023, E Ink had already reached 35% of its renewable energy goals (RE35) across its global operations, including its U.S. sites in Billerica and South Hadley.
E Ink's dedication to reducing its carbon footprint was also recognized through validation by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2023. This accomplishment underscores the company's leadership in sustainable manufacturing practices, with 99.9% of its revenue classified as green by the FTSE Russell Green Revenue 2.0 Data Model.
Founded on technology originating from MIT's Media Lab, E Ink continues to shape the future of display technologies with its low-power, environmentally friendly ePaper products. As the company looks forward to its RE100 and Net Zero goals, it stands as a shining example of how innovation and sustainability can coexist, making it deserving of this year’s top manufacturing honor.
