Edmonton Elks Eye First Labour Day Series Sweep in Two Decades
The Edmonton Elks are on the cusp of a historic achievement as they prepare for the Labour Day Rematch against the Calgary Stampeders. This game holds special significance as it represents the Elks' chance to secure their first Labour Day series sweep in 20 years. The Elks' recent performance has been nothing short of impressive, particularly after their rocky start to the season.
The Elks, who began the year with a dismal 0-7 record, have turned their fortunes around in remarkable fashion. They've won four out of their last five games, showcasing a revival that has rejuvenated their season. Their most recent triumph came on Labour Day Monday, where they decisively defeated the Stampeders 35-20. This victory marked only their second win on Labour Day since the 2012 season. As they head into the rematch, the Elks are looking to complete a series sweep—a feat they haven’t achieved since 2004.

Elks interim head coach Jarious Jackson is anticipating a tougher challenge from the Stampeders in the rematch. Despite the short turnaround, Jackson is focused on making necessary adjustments to capitalize on their momentum. A win would not only cement the Elks' position in fourth place in the West Division but also secure the season-series against Calgary, leaving only one more game to be played on October 12 in Calgary.
Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson has been a key player in the Elks' resurgence, passing for a career-high 486 yards in their recent game. Receiver Tevin Jones has also been instrumental, catching five passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. With 549 receiving yards on just 20 catches, Jones leads the league in yards per catch at an impressive 27.5 yards.
The Elks' running game has been equally formidable, with the team averaging 168.6 yards per game over the last five outings. This balance in offense has been crucial for their recent success. However, the team faces some challenges, including the loss of defensive end Noah Taylor to a shoulder injury and the return of kicker Boris Bede to the lineup after a brief benching.
The upcoming Labour Day Rematch at Commonwealth Stadium is set to kick off at 5 p.m., with the broadcast starting at 3:30 p.m. on 630 CHED. Fans can look forward to live commentary from Morley Scott and Dave Campbell, along with analysis from former Edmonton Football Team offensive lineman Blake Dermott and Gord Hinse.
As the Elks aim for a historic sweep, all eyes will be on them to see if they can continue their impressive turnaround and secure a place in the playoffs.
