Egg Recall Alert in Three States Over Possible Salmonella Contamination

An urgent recall has been issued for eggs sold in three states due to concerns over potential salmonella contamination. This recall involves eggs produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms, a Wisconsin-based company, and distributed across Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have linked these eggs to a possible salmonella outbreak, which has already sickened 65 people across nine states, with 24 requiring hospitalization.

Following a thorough investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the salmonella strain was identified in both the egg-packing facility and the hen-laying areas of the farm. In response, Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC voluntarily recalled their products on September 6, 2024. This recall affects all types of eggs under the brands “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market,” regardless of their size or expiration date. Consumers and businesses are being urged not to consume or serve these eggs and to dispose of them immediately.

The CDC has reported that the outbreak dates back to May 2024, and in addition to Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, other affected states include California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Utah, and Virginia. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning can start as early as six hours after exposure, including fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. It is particularly dangerous for young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

If you have any of these eggs in your possession, it is crucial to avoid consuming them. The FDA and CDC emphasize that cooking eggs properly, ensuring the yolks and whites are firm, can help reduce the risk of salmonella. However, with this recall, it’s safest to avoid the affected brands altogether.

As the situation develops, the CDC will continue to monitor and update the public on any new cases or further actions needed. Consumers with concerns are encouraged to contact Milo’s Poultry Farms directly or visit the CDC’s website for the latest updates. Stay safe by thoroughly checking your egg supply and avoiding any potential health risks from this outbreak.
