The Canada Army Run is more than just a race—it's a meaningful way to support the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) community. Eric Depenau, a dedicated member of the Defence team, runs this event each year with a deep sense of purpose. As he gears up for the 2024 race, his motivation goes beyond personal achievement. For Eric, this run is a way to give back to programs that have touched the lives of fellow servicemembers, like Soldier On and Support Our Troops . These initiatives provide crucial support for military families, and he’s witnessed firsthand how much they can change lives.

Eric has seen colleagues benefit from everything from national scholarship opportunities to holiday gift cards provided through local military family resource centers (MFRCs). He speaks about how the programs have been there for members who’ve faced devastating losses, such as homes destroyed by fire, allowing them to regain normalcy by replacing essential items, including sports equipment. Others in the CAF with children who have special needs or those who want to send their kids to summer camps also receive assistance through these vital programs. For Eric, knowing that these resources are available gives him peace of mind—not just for himself, but for his entire Defence team.

What makes this year’s race particularly exciting for Eric is his role as team captain for the Bravo Company of The Rocky Mountain Rangers, a British Columbia-based infantry reserve unit. With 14 members on board, many taking on the Commander’s Challenge, the team has been pushing each other to raise the bar both in fundraising and fitness. Their collective effort has made them the top fundraising team in Canada so far, with over $8,000 raised and counting.

Running as part of a team has brought a new energy to Eric's experience. In previous years, he ran solo, but this year’s camaraderie is unmatched. Their shared motivation extends beyond the Army Run; they participate in other meaningful events, like the annual Remembrance Day 11k at 2 a.m. and the Canadian Walk for Veterans. Last year, several members even ran 15km a day for seven consecutive days to support Wounded Warriors Canada, showing just how committed they are to the cause.

As the 2024 Canada Army Run approaches, it’s clear that for Eric, the race isn’t just about crossing the finish line—it’s about leading from the front, embodying the CAF values of teamwork and resilience. Even though registration for the race is closed, donations to Support Our Troops and Soldier On are still being accepted, and with participants like Eric, every contribution is sure to make a real difference.
