Flames Dominate Oilers with 12 Goals in Thrilling Split-Squad Preseason
The Calgary Flames set the tone for their preseason campaign with an emphatic performance against their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Oilers, scoring 12 goals in a pair of split-squad games. Although these are preseason contests, the Flames showed they are ready to make a statement this year, delivering back-to-back wins with a 6-1 victory in Calgary and a 6-3 win up north in Edmonton.
In Calgary, the Flames were firing on all cylinders from the get-go. Connor Zary and Yegor Sharangovich both delivered standout performances, each netting two goals. Nazem Kadri and Daniil Miromanov added to the offensive onslaught, with Captain Mikael Backlund chipping in two assists. In goal, Dan Vladar was solid, making 19 saves before handing over duties to Waltteri Ignatjew, who faced just two shots in the final period.

The game started with some early adversity as Blake Coleman was sent to the penalty box for a trip, giving the Oilers an early powerplay opportunity. Edmonton’s Mike Hoffman capitalized quickly with a powerplay goal, putting the Oilers on the board. However, that was all Edmonton would manage, as the Flames responded immediately, with Kadri tying the game in less than a minute, setting the tone for the rest of the night.
Zary’s first goal came in spectacular fashion, as he tipped a Backlund pass with one hand, celebrating with fist pumps as he slid into the corner. He wasn’t done, though, as his second goal, a slick toe drag followed by a low blocker-side shot, capped off a powerplay sequence. Sharangovich was also in fine form, scoring twice, including a blistering short-side shot in the third period.
Meanwhile, in Edmonton, the Flames delivered another commanding performance, winning 6-3. The Flames' depth shone brightly, as the second squad kept up the offensive pressure, sending a strong message to the Oilers as both sides prepare for the regular season.
This exhibition dominance not only showcased the Flames' scoring ability but also highlighted their depth and chemistry across the roster. Preseason games may not count for much in the standings, but Calgary’s showing against their biggest rivals certainly builds excitement as the regular season approaches.
