Flames Fall 4-3 to Canucks in Overtime in Preseason Thriller
In a thrilling preseason matchup, the Calgary Flames fell 4-3 in overtime to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night in Abbotsford, B.C. The game was marked by intense back-and-forth action, with both teams showing flashes of brilliance despite still tuning up for the regular season.
The Canucks started the scoring late in the first period when Max Sasson found the back of the net with just 22 seconds remaining. Vancouver held an 11-7 shot advantage after the opening frame, but the Flames came out swinging in the second. Jake Bean equalized the game for Calgary early in the second period, delivering a smooth wrist shot after a face-off win that left Vancouver’s goalie Jiri Patera with no chance. The Canucks regained the lead later in the period when Jake DeBrusk tipped in a goal, leaving Vancouver ahead 2-1 going into the third.

In the final period, Calgary upped the tempo, and it paid off. Sam Honzek tipped in a pass from Martin Pospisil to tie the game once again, this time at 2-2. Minutes later, Dryden Hunt capitalized on a breakaway opportunity, sliding the puck through Patera’s legs to give the Flames their first lead of the game at 3-2. However, the Canucks were not done yet. With just 14 seconds left in regulation, Daniel Sprong scored on a powerplay, forcing overtime.
The extra period was short-lived, with DeBrusk scoring his second of the night less than a minute into OT to seal the victory for Vancouver. Despite the loss, the Flames showed plenty of fight, particularly in bouncing back from multiple deficits and taking the lead late in the third.
Both goalies for Calgary played well, with Dustin Wolf stopping 17 of 19 shots in his 40 minutes of action and Devin Cooley making 11 saves in the final period and overtime. Offensively, Hunt stood out with two points, while the team struggled on the powerplay, going 0-for-3, compared to Vancouver’s 1-for-3 performance.
This preseason contest showed promising signs for both teams as they gear up for the regular season. The Flames will have a chance for revenge when they meet the Canucks again on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
