Frankie Beverly, Iconic Maze Frontman, Dies at 77, Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Frankie Beverly, the legendary frontman of Maze, has passed away at the age of 77. Known for his smooth, soulful voice and the timeless anthems he created with Maze, Beverly’s death marks the end of an era in R&B music. His family confirmed the news on social media, requesting privacy and remembering him as someone who lived life with a pure soul. Though the cause of his death has not been disclosed, the legacy he leaves behind is immense, touching fans across generations with songs like “Before I Let Go,” “Joy and Pain,” and “We Are One.”
Beverly’s final tour, the “I Wanna Thank You Tour,” concluded in July 2023 in his hometown of Philadelphia. That same month, the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans paid tribute to Beverly and Maze, acknowledging their contributions to Black culture. Beverly’s performances at the Essence Festival were iconic, where he often closed out the event during its first 15 years. The festival organizers said his music “stitched together our collective memories and moments of joy,” a sentiment echoed by the legions of fans who came to celebrate his artistry year after year.

Born Howard Stanley Beverly on December 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, he was inspired by the 1950s group Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, which led him to change his name to Frankie. After forming Maze in the early 1970s, the band gained prominence with the help of Marvin Gaye, who convinced Beverly to change the group’s name from Raw Soul to Maze. Their debut album, “Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly,” was released in 1977, marking the beginning of a storied career that spanned decades.
Beverly’s influence extended beyond music. He was an entertainer who made sure his fans walked away from every performance with a lasting, unforgettable experience. As Marc Morial, former mayor of New Orleans, put it, “His music had feeling. It had positive themes of love, happiness, family, and togetherness. It was just electrical and magical.”
