HBO Launches Open Casting Call for New Harry Potter Trio

Exciting news for Harry Potter fans everywhere! HBO has just announced a major step in the development of their highly anticipated "Harry Potter" TV series: they are officially opening a casting call for the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. This announcement, which has been circulating online and confirmed by HBO, marks the beginning of a search for young talent to bring these beloved characters to life once again.

The casting call is specifically targeting children who are residents of the UK and Ireland and will be between the ages of 9 and 11 as of April 2025. This means that if you know a child who fits this age range and meets the residency requirement, there’s a potential opportunity for them to step into the magical world of Hogwarts. HBO is emphasizing that they are committed to an inclusive and diverse casting process. The casting notice stresses that they are seeking qualified performers without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status, unless otherwise indicated.

For those interested in auditioning, the process involves submitting two short self-tapes. The first tape should feature a short poem or story of the applicant's choosing, but it should not be from any "Harry Potter" material. This allows the casting team to see the child’s ability to convey emotion and personality in their own voice. The second tape should be a brief introduction, including personal details such as date of birth, height, and a description of a family member, friend, or pet that they are particularly close to. Both videos should use the applicant’s own accent and adhere to the specified time limits—30 seconds for the poem or story and one minute for the personal introduction.

The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2024, and the series is slated to begin filming in the UK during 2025-2026. Although there is no official release date yet, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has hinted at a potential 2026 debut. The series will span seven seasons, with each season adapting one of J.K. Rowling’s original books.

Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on "Succession" and "Killing Eve," will serve as the showrunner and executive producer. Mark Mylod, also a "Succession" alum, will executive produce and direct several episodes. This dynamic team promises a faithful and fresh adaptation of the magical world we all know and love.
