Highway 55 Reopens Just in Time for Saint-Tite Western Festival
Great news for everyone looking forward to the Saint-Tite Western Festival! The long-awaited reopening of Highway 55 at Saint-Étienne-des-Grès is finally set to happen on Friday morning, right in time for the festival kick-off. This reopening comes after a major two-week closure for extensive road repairs.
On August 19, Highway 55 was abruptly shut down due to a risk of road collapse caused by heavy rains from recent storms. The closure led to significant disruptions and traffic rerouting through Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, causing considerable congestion in the area. The reconstruction involved addressing severe erosion and replacing a drainage culvert situated deep within the roadbed.

Minister of Transport Geneviève Guilbault confirmed the positive news on social media, emphasizing the importance of completing the repairs before the festival begins on September 6. She praised the dedicated work of the teams who managed to achieve this remarkable turnaround, ensuring that the road would be fully operational for both directions.
Saint-Étienne-des-Grès’ mayor, Nancy Mignault, expressed relief and gratitude for the road reopening. She noted how the closure had impacted daily life, with residents adapting to the detours and traffic issues over the past 18 days. Mignault also commended the resilience of the community and the efforts of everyone involved in the repair process.
Festival organizers, too, are breathing a sigh of relief. David Moreau, president of the festival committee, acknowledged that while alternative plans had been made to accommodate the expected influx of visitors, the reopening of the highway will undoubtedly ease access to the event. The festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees, can now proceed without the added stress of road access issues.
Highway 55 typically sees around 22,000 vehicles passing through daily, so this reopening is not only crucial for the festival but also for the local economy and daily commuters. As final touches are completed, including asphalt finishing and cleaning, the road will be fully open and ready for all types of vehicles.
In summary, the timely reopening of Highway 55 is a significant relief for both the local community and festival-goers. It demonstrates effective crisis management and dedication from the transport authorities and local officials. As the festival gets underway, visitors can enjoy smooth travel and an enhanced experience, all thanks to the successful repair efforts.
