IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bengal Over the Weekend
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert for the coming weekend, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in various states, including Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra, and West Bengal. According to the IMD forecast, these regions could experience isolated heavy rain, urging local residents to stay prepared and cautious, as the weather could lead to disruptive conditions.
In Gujarat, particularly in the southern parts, the rainfall is expected to be intense, with officials highlighting a moderate flash flood risk for some areas, especially the coastal regions of Konkan and Goa. The IMD has also indicated that areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra, and Kutch may see isolated heavy rainfall on September 28. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is forecasted across the state and neighboring regions over the next few days, with scattered showers continuing throughout the week.

Meanwhile, West Bengal and Sikkim, along with Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, are also under a heavy rainfall watch. The IMD predicts isolated heavy rains for these areas between September 28 and early October, with the heaviest downpours expected around October 2 and 3. The northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, will also experience widespread rain, with isolated thunderstorms expected over the weekend and into the early days of next week.
As the southwest monsoon begins to withdraw from parts of India, the intensity of rain in some central and northern regions will gradually diminish. However, the IMD has also forecasted moderate to heavy rains for regions like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on September 27 and 28, raising concerns for potential landslides in these hilly terrains. The alert extends to East and West Uttar Pradesh, which could experience scattered heavy rain.
In southern India, states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka are also expected to receive significant rainfall over the weekend. Coastal areas of Karnataka and southern interiors of the state could see heavier showers by September 30, while isolated heavy rains are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Mahe from September 28 onward.
In summary, while some regions brace for heavy rainfall, others will see a gradual withdrawal of the monsoon. It’s essential for residents in the affected areas to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions. The IMD’s alerts serve as a reminder to stay vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides, as weather conditions could evolve rapidly.
