James McAvoy Turned Down a Star Trek Role in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Film
James McAvoy, a name synonymous with stellar performances in films like X-Men and Split , was once offered a role in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009). Despite being a passionate fan of the sci-fi franchise, McAvoy ultimately decided to turn down the opportunity. In a candid conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, McAvoy shared that although he was excited about the offer, he didn’t feel he was the right fit for the role.

“I got offered something. I didn’t want to do that,” McAvoy recalled. He explained that while he was interested in the project, he didn’t feel aligned with the specific role they had in mind for him. Even after being offered a camera test, he opted to bow out, stating, “It’s alright, don’t worry about it.” While he didn’t reveal the exact part, speculation suggests that he might have been considered for either McCoy or Scotty, key characters in the rebooted Star Trek universe.
What stands out is McAvoy’s gracious acknowledgment of Abrams' casting decisions. He felt that the person eventually chosen for the role was perfect, remarking, “The kind of person I thought that I’m not, is exactly the person who got it. And it’s brilliant.” His respect for Abrams’ films remains intact, praising the direction and creativity that brought the reimagined Star Trek to life. He even admitted to loving Abrams' Star Trek films, which have been widely lauded for modernizing the beloved franchise.
While McAvoy missed this chance to boldly go where no one has gone before, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of joining the Star Trek universe in the future. Fans have long speculated that he might play a younger Jean-Luc Picard, having already portrayed a young Charles Xavier in the X-Men films—another iconic character originally played by Patrick Stewart.
