Jared Harris Questions HBO's 'Harry Potter' TV Reboot: 'Why Do It?'
In a recent interview, Jared Harris, the son of the original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris, has expressed his skepticism about HBO’s upcoming 'Harry Potter' TV reboot. Harris, known for his performances in Mad Men and Chernobyl , was asked about the possibility of reprising his father’s iconic role in the new series. His response was quite direct: "No, thank you." He added, "The films were fantastic—leave them alone." This marks a clear stance from Harris, who doesn’t seem to share the excitement surrounding the reboot, questioning its necessity when the original films are still so beloved by fans.

The original Harry Potter film series, based on J.K. Rowling’s books, captivated a global audience and remains a cultural cornerstone to this day. Richard Harris, Jared’s father, originally brought the beloved character of Albus Dumbledore to life in the first two films before his passing in 2002. For Jared, the notion of stepping into his father’s shoes for the reboot doesn’t seem appealing. He acknowledged that while the expanded format of a TV series might allow for more depth and storytelling than the films, he still questions why there’s a need to revisit the material.
Jared’s sentiments seem to resonate with many fans who have fond memories of the original films and are uncertain about whether a reboot is necessary. Still, others are excited about the potential of diving deeper into the magical world, given the expanded runtime a television series offers. The reboot aims to cover each book with a dedicated season, which could explore characters and events that were left out or underdeveloped in the films.
HBO’s reboot, produced by Francesca Gardiner ( Succession , His Dark Materials ) and Mark Mylod ( Succession ), is set to debut in 2026. Casting is already underway for the new trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, with an emphasis on inclusive casting across all races, ethnicities, and gender identities.
Despite Jared Harris distancing himself from the role of Dumbledore, other Harry Potter alumni like Gary Oldman have expressed openness to returning in some capacity. As excitement builds for the series, it’s clear the debate over whether to revisit such a well-loved franchise will continue.
