In a surprising turn of events, John Barrowman, the beloved star known for his roles in Doctor Who and Torchwood , exited the reality show Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins merely 32 minutes after arriving at base camp. The sixth series of the Channel 4 program, which debuted this past Sunday, features celebrities undergoing rigorous SAS-style training in New Zealand. However, Barrowman’s participation ended abruptly after a bout of vomiting following his first challenge.
Barrowman, 57, faced an unexpected challenge during the show’s initial tasks, which involved navigating across a daunting 335-foot canyon on two steel parallel bars. Shortly after donning his military uniform, he began to feel unwell and was seen throwing up. When chief instructor Mark "Billy" Billingham inquired if he needed medical attention, Barrowman simply replied, “No... I’m done,” emphasizing that the experience was not suitable for him. He candidly shared, “I know who I am and what I’m about; it’s not for me.”
Adding to the drama, Barrowman addressed past allegations regarding his behavior on set during his time with the BBC, where he faced accusations of inappropriate conduct. Reflecting on these claims, he expressed that they deeply affected him. “Having that happen to me ruined me,” he stated, but he hoped that participating in the show would allow people to see his true character. He mentioned, “We've all done stupid things... but what’s been said about me will never go away now.”
His abrupt departure from the show has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many viewers labeling his exit as “pathetic” and questioning his decision to leave so soon. Some criticized him for appearing overly sensitive, with comments ranging from calling him a “diva” to expressing disappointment that he couldn’t handle the pressure of the competition.
Interestingly, Barrowman later revealed the real reason behind his swift exit: he was forced to consume “vile tofu” after being offered no alternative food, despite not being a fan of the ingredient. He recounted that the experience made him feel nauseous, particularly after enduring a two-hour car ride prior to the challenge. “I thought, I’m not going to make myself ill or hurt myself to prove something,” he asserted, underscoring his comfort with who he is.
As the first contestant to leave this season’s lineup, Barrowman’s departure leaves viewers intrigued about how the other celebrities will fare in the demanding environment. The cast includes a variety of personalities, from reality stars to athletes, each bringing their unique challenges to the mix. Despite the criticism, Barrowman remains a figure of interest, and his brief appearance on the show will likely be a topic of discussion in the weeks to come. The series continues to air on Channel 4 every Sunday and Monday, promising more dramatic moments ahead.
