Joshua Dobbs: From Preseason Standout to 49ers' Third String Quarterback
As the San Francisco 49ers gear up for the 2024 NFL season, Joshua Dobbs finds himself in a surprising position. Despite his impressive preseason performances, Dobbs will start the year as the team's third-string quarterback, with Brandon Allen securing the backup role behind starter Brock Purdy.
This turn of events comes after Dobbs had shown considerable potential during the offseason. Known for his recent starting experience with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings, Dobbs entered the 49ers' camp as a strong contender for the backup quarterback spot. His 2023 season, though marked by a 3-9 record, included some standout moments, including a respectable 79.5 quarterback rating and 13 touchdown passes. Dobbs also showcased his mobility by rushing for 421 yards and six touchdowns.

The 49ers initially signed Dobbs to provide competition for Allen, who had spent the previous season as the team's third-string quarterback behind Purdy and Sam Darnold. Darnold, who had signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, left a void that the 49ers hoped Dobbs could fill. However, Allen's familiarity with the team's system and his performance in practice earned him the nod as Purdy's backup.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan explained that while Dobbs had closed the gap with his game performances, Allen's prior knowledge of the 49ers' system played a significant role in the decision. Shanahan noted, “Brandon had the head start, just being here. I thought he did some better things in practice. Josh really closed the gap in the games, but Brandon has a little more similarities to Brock, which I think made us lean that way. It was a tough decision.”
As the season unfolds, Dobbs will serve as an experienced insurance policy in case of injuries to Purdy or Allen. His role as the third-string quarterback means he’ll be ready to step in if needed but will not see regular playing time unless the situation demands it. For now, he remains a valuable asset to the 49ers' quarterback room, bringing a wealth of experience and a track record of solid performances to the team.
