Kate Garraway Delivers Heartfelt Speech at NTAs with Children by Her Side
Kate Garraway delivered a poignant and deeply emotional speech at the National Television Awards (NTAs) on Wednesday evening, as she accepted the award for Best Authored Documentary for her heartfelt film, Derek's Story . The ceremony, held at London's O2 Arena, was a significant moment for the Good Morning Britain host, marking a bittersweet milestone in her life and career.
Garraway, who looked stunning in a sparkling tuxedo, was accompanied on stage by her children, Darcey, 18, and Billy, 15. The family’s presence underscored the deeply personal nature of the award and the documentary. Derek's Story chronicles the last months of her late husband Derek Draper’s life, who tragically passed away in January at the age of 56 after a prolonged battle with Covid-19.

As she began her speech, Garraway’s voice trembled with emotion. "This is a bittersweet one, isn’t it?" she said, holding back tears. "It's very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy." The emotional weight of the moment was evident as she reflected on the challenges of navigating the first year of significant anniversaries and milestones without Derek. “We're halfway through the first year of firsts really,” she noted, acknowledging the profound sense of loss that accompanies each new experience.
The NTAs came on the heels of a deeply personal moment for Garraway just the day before—her 20th wedding anniversary with Derek. She had shared with her followers on Instagram how the day was filled with both reflection and sorrow, describing the absence of Derek as a "roaring, roaring train" of grief. Despite the pain, she expressed gratitude for the love they shared and the memories they created.
In her acceptance speech, Garraway also addressed the backlash she faced over the documentary, revealing her frustration with those who criticized her for highlighting her husband’s suffering. She spoke candidly about Derek’s feelings of inadequacy and burden, emphasizing the importance of honoring his story and the broader issue of caregiving. "It's wonderful to have the chance to honour him and also honour the millions," she said. “I felt it would be wrong to walk away from the caring campaign that I feel I have a responsibility for.”
The night was not only a testament to Garraway's resilience but also a reflection of the ongoing support from her fans and the public. The award for Derek's Story signifies not just a personal victory but also a tribute to the countless individuals and families affected by similar struggles.
The NTAs, known for celebrating television excellence, also saw other notable winners. Ant and Dec continued their record-breaking streak, winning Best Presenter for the 23rd time, while Mr Bates Vs The Post Office emerged as a major winner of the night with three awards, including Best Serial Drama Performance for Toby Jones.
Despite the controversies surrounding various shows, including Strictly Come Dancing and This Morning, the evening remained a celebration of outstanding achievements in television. Garraway’s emotional acceptance of the Best Authored Documentary award was undoubtedly one of the most memorable highlights of the event, encapsulating both personal triumph and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
