Labour Day 2024: What’s Open and Closed in Ottawa
Labour Day, observed on the first Monday of September, marks the unofficial end of summer and is a time to recognize the contributions of workers. In Ottawa, this holiday is celebrated with various events, closures, and limited services, making it essential for residents and visitors to plan their day accordingly.
On Labour Day, many Ottawa residents look forward to enjoying the last of the summer weather, attending parades, or simply relaxing. However, it's crucial to know what’s open and closed in the city to make the most of the day.
Shopping and Attractions
Most grocery stores across Ottawa will be closed on Labour Day, but a few exceptions include Whole Foods at Lansdowne Park, Farm Boy at Rideau Centre, and Loblaws on Rideau Street. If you need to stock up on last-minute items, these stores will be your go-to options.
For those planning to enjoy a cold beverage, note that seven Beer Stores in Ottawa will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Although LCBO locations will be closed, alcohol can still be purchased at rural LCBO convenience outlets and some grocery stores that will remain open on Monday.

If you’re looking to do some shopping or enjoy a day out, it's worth noting that major malls like Bayshore, Place d'Orléans, and St. Laurent will be closed. However, Rideau Centre and Tanger Outlets will be open, although individual store hours may vary, so checking ahead is advisable.
Museums and galleries are a great way to spend the day, especially if the weather doesn't cooperate. The National Gallery of Canada and various other museums, including those dedicated to agriculture, aviation, history, nature, science, and war, will be open. However, the Ottawa Art Gallery and Diefenbunker will be closed, so plan your cultural visits accordingly.
Municipal Services
When it comes to municipal services, there are several important closures to be aware of. Green bin, recycling, and garbage collection services will be on hold for the day, with pickups resuming on Tuesday and delayed by one day for the rest of the week. Libraries and municipal child-care centers will also be closed, as will many recreation facilities. Some pools and fitness centers will operate on modified schedules, but it’s best to check ahead to avoid any disappointment.
For those who rely on Ottawa Public Health services, be aware that the Site program office and supervised consumption services at 179 Clarence St. will be closed, along with the Sexual Health Clinic and dental clinics. However, the Site mobile van will operate from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., providing some essential services during the holiday.
Getting Around
If you’re driving in the city, all City of Ottawa parking regulations and restrictions will remain in effect. For public transit users, OC Transpo will be operating on a Sunday schedule, so plan your routes accordingly. It's also the last day for special summer weekend services on routes 125, 139, and 185. Be aware that Route 301 between Richmond and Carlingwood will not run. The OC Transpo Rideau Centre customer service center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the lost and found at Heartwood House will be closed.
Para Transpo users should note that regular bookings will be automatically canceled on Labour Day. Riders can still book trips through My Para Transpo or by calling the Para Transpo phone line, which will remain open for urgent needs.
In summary, while Labour Day in Ottawa offers a final opportunity to soak in the summer vibes, being aware of what’s open and closed will help you plan a hassle-free day. Whether you’re shopping, enjoying cultural activities, or simply navigating the city, a little preparation will go a long way in making your Labour Day enjoyable.
