Leverkusen Triumphs Over Wolfsburg in Thrilling 4-3 Victory
In a breathtaking Bundesliga showdown, Bayer Leverkusen edged out VfL Wolfsburg with a 4-3 win, thanks to a dramatic late goal by Victor Boniface in stoppage time. This match, held on September 22, 2024, was anything but predictable, as both teams saw multiple lead changes, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
Wolfsburg initially took the lead in the 5th minute through an unfortunate own goal by Leverkusen's new signing, Nordi Mukiele. However, the setback didn’t deter Leverkusen, as they quickly regained their rhythm. Florian Wirtz equalized in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a smart pass from Granit Xhaka. The momentum continued with Jonathan Tah heading home from a corner to make it 2-1 for Leverkusen in the 32nd minute. But Wolfsburg wasn’t ready to give up just yet. In a quick turnaround, Sebastiaan Bornauw leveled the score at 2-2 before Mattias Svanberg put Wolfsburg ahead again just before halftime, leaving the score 3-2.

The second half saw Leverkusen reasserting themselves almost immediately. Piero Hincapie headed in an equalizer just minutes after the break, making it 3-3. The pressure mounted for Wolfsburg, and their chances took a hit when Yannick Gerhardt was sent off with a red card in the 88th minute. With Wolfsburg down to 10 men, Leverkusen pressed forward relentlessly, and in the dying moments of the game, Victor Boniface stepped up with a decisive goal in the third minute of added time, sealing a 4-3 victory for Leverkusen.
Despite the victory, Leverkusen’s performance exposed some defensive frailties, as noted by their captain, Granit Xhaka. While he praised the team's fighting spirit, Xhaka pointed out that the defensive lapses need addressing if they are to maintain their title ambitions. "We can't defend like this. It's not enough at this level," Xhaka commented after the match. Jonathan Tah echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for improvement, particularly in defending set pieces.
Leverkusen's mental resilience, however, cannot be overlooked. The team’s ability to keep fighting until the last whistle has become a hallmark under coach Xabi Alonso. This victory extended their unbeaten streak in Sunday matches to 23, keeping them firmly in contention at the top of the Bundesliga standings, just behind Bayern Munich.
For Wolfsburg, the result was their third defeat in four matches, and coach Ralph Hasenhüttl faces the task of lifting his squad as they look to recover from a tough start to the season.
In a game filled with excitement, tactical shifts, and plenty of goals, this clash between Leverkusen and Wolfsburg will be remembered as one of the most thrilling encounters of the 2024 season.
