Liz Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris for President, Citing Trump's Threat to Democracy
In a surprising move, Republican former congresswoman Liz Cheney has announced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. Cheney, who has long been a vocal critic of Donald Trump, made the announcement during remarks at Duke University. She stated that her decision was driven by the belief that Trump poses a significant danger to the country's democratic foundations. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this,” Cheney said. “Not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
This decision is particularly significant because Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has been a stalwart in the Republican Party for decades. However, her outspoken stance against Trump, particularly her leadership role on the January 6th Select Committee investigating the Capitol attack, has put her at odds with the GOP establishment. In 2022, Cheney lost her seat in Congress after being defeated in a primary by a Trump-endorsed candidate. Her continued criticism of Trump’s influence within the party has only grown since then.

By endorsing Harris, Cheney underscores her commitment to preventing Trump's return to power, which she sees as a threat not only to the rule of law but to the future of American democracy. She emphasized the importance of voters, especially in swing states, making strategic choices. “People do not have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in battleground states,” she warned, suggesting that any vote not directly opposing Trump could inadvertently aid his victory.
Cheney’s endorsement of a Democrat like Harris is unprecedented and adds to a growing list of Republicans who have broken ranks over concerns about Trump. Figures like former Congressman Adam Kinzinger, who also served on the January 6th Committee, have similarly expressed their support for Democratic candidates in an effort to block Trump’s path to the White House.
This bold endorsement from Cheney reflects the deep divisions within the Republican Party over Trump’s role and future. Her decision to back Harris may influence other moderate Republicans and conservatives who, like her, prioritize the safeguarding of democratic principles over party loyalty.
