Luke Darcy Steps Away from AFL Commentary, Focuses on New Ventures
AFL commentator and former Western Bulldogs star Luke Darcy has confirmed his decision to step away from his media career at Channel Seven and Triple M. After the 2024 AFL Grand Final, Darcy will officially leave his roles, ending a 17-year tenure as one of the most recognizable voices in AFL broadcasting. Darcy, who played over 200 games for the Western Bulldogs, has been a beloved figure in both the sporting world and the media for decades. But now, at 49, he’s ready to take on new challenges.
In a statement, Darcy expressed his gratitude for the relationships he has built during his time in the industry. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked with some of the best people you could ever meet on and off air over the last 17 years at Seven and Triple M,” he said. Reflecting on his career, Darcy acknowledged the "fun and enjoyment" of working in commentary and calling games, which he described as a "privilege." However, he’s now looking forward to shifting his focus to his leadership business, Aleda, and his "Empowering Leaders" podcast.

While some have speculated that Darcy's departure may be connected to the recent changes in Channel Seven's AFL team, particularly with the signing of high-profile commentator Kane Cornes, Darcy has made it clear that this decision has been in the works for several months. With several professional interests competing for his attention, Darcy is prioritizing his growing business ventures, which will allow him to explore new paths outside of football media.
Darcy’s decision also coincides with a pivotal moment in his family life, as his son Sam, a rising star for the Western Bulldogs, is quickly making a name for himself in the AFL. The proud father plans to enjoy watching Sam’s career unfold from the stands as a fan, rather than from the commentary box.
As Luke Darcy steps away from the microphone, his contributions to both the game and the broadcasting community won’t be forgotten. Chris Jones, Seven’s head of sport, praised Darcy’s influence, not just in front of the camera but also behind the scenes. "His loyalty and leadership behind the scenes have been just as great," Jones remarked, highlighting Darcy’s unique blend of expertise, passion, and camaraderie.
Luke Darcy leaves a lasting legacy in the world of AFL commentary, and fans, while sad to see him go, can’t help but be excited to see where his new ventures take him.
