Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur and "Shark Tank" star, has openly shared his desire to acquire two prominent media entities: Fox News and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. In a recent interview with Wired , Cuban revealed that if he had the financial means, he would jump at the chance to purchase both. However, the reality of such acquisitions remains far out of reach due to the massive price tags involved.
Cuban has been vocal about his frustrations with Fox News, especially regarding what he calls the "Fox News generation." He has expressed disappointment in how baby boomers, a generation he recalls embracing countercultural movements like sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, have now largely aligned with the conservative network. Cuban’s idea to buy Fox News stems from his hope to disrupt this trend, yet he acknowledges that the hefty price—around $15 to $20 billion—makes such a deal unlikely. As Cuban put it, “I don’t have $15 or $20 billion in cash sitting around,” despite his significant net worth.
Fox News isn't the only platform Cuban has his eye on. He also hinted at his desire to acquire X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. However, he quickly admitted that such a deal is improbable. Cuban pointed out that Musk likely has no intention of selling the platform, especially after investing heavily and rebranding it from Twitter to X. Cuban, an active user of X, has been critical of Musk's changes to the platform, but the two have also engaged in a public back-and-forth, which Cuban seems to enjoy.
Despite Cuban’s desire to reshape both Fox News and X, the financial and practical challenges are clear. While Cuban has made substantial business moves in the past, such as his leap into the pharmaceutical industry with his Cost Plus Drugs venture, these media acquisitions are not on the horizon. For now, Cuban seems content to voice his opinions and spar with Musk online, even if the dream of buying these platforms remains a distant one.
