New Beginnings: Georgian College Welcomes Students to Vibrant Campus Life
Today marks an exciting milestone for Georgian College as nearly 200 students move into the Orillia campus residence, signaling the start of a new academic year. The campus is buzzing with energy as first-year students, full of anticipation and a few nerves, settle into their new homes. Eleanor Sidley, the general manager of residence, captures the essence of the day by noting the blend of excitement and nervousness among the students as they embark on this new chapter in their lives.
The Orillia campus, now at full capacity with 192 students, provides more than just a place to stay—it offers a built-in community and a strong support system. Sidley emphasizes the importance of this, encouraging students to immerse themselves in campus life and forge connections with their peers. As classes are set to begin soon, this initial period is crucial for students to acclimate and integrate into their new environment.

Emma Roberts, a first-year student in the developmental services program, is one of the many who made the move to Orillia today. Hailing from Walkerton, she is passionate about special-needs work and chose Georgian Orillia for its intimate, close-knit atmosphere. For Roberts, the smaller campus size means a more personalized experience where she won’t feel lost in the crowd. She’s eager to meet new people and participate in campus clubs, fully embracing the opportunities that lie ahead.
Returning students like Kaylie Young, a third-year student in the addictions treatment and prevention program, also share their insights. Young recalls the nerves she felt during her first move to campus, offering advice to new students to balance their academic responsibilities with social activities. She stresses the importance of finding a supportive group of friends and staying connected with family to ease the transition and avoid homesickness.
Over at the Barrie campus, the scene is similar as more than 650 students move into residence. Among them is Charlie Sirois-Morin, a second-year game design student from Quebec. Sirois-Morin is thrilled to continue her journey at Georgian, where she has found a welcoming community and endless opportunities. The proximity of the residence to campus amenities and the sense of camaraderie among students have made her experience both convenient and enjoyable.
For students new to Georgian College, whether at the Orillia or Barrie campus, these first few days are filled with a mix of emotions. But as they settle in, they are sure to find that they are not alone.
