Ollie Bearman Crashes in FP3 at Baku, Bringing Out Red Flags
In a dramatic turn of events during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ollie Bearman, the 19-year-old British driver stepping in for Haas, found himself crashing into the barriers during FP3 at the Baku City Circuit. Bearman, in his first full F1 race weekend for Haas, was showing a lot of promise before this unfortunate incident. However, while navigating Turn 1, he misjudged his braking, leading to a collision with the wall and bringing out the red flags.
Bearman had been looking strong after a solid performance on Friday. As he approached Turn 1 in FP3, it was clear that he had overcooked the braking and desperately tried to steer into the run-off area. Unfortunately, he couldn't manage to turn in time, and the car hit the wall side-on, damaging the front left section. This crash added another red flag to an already chaotic session, where Esteban Ocon had earlier come to a halt as well.

The crash left Haas with a heavily damaged car and limited time to make repairs before the crucial qualifying session. Team Principal Ayao Komatsu expressed his confidence that Bearman could reset mentally after the crash, saying, "Ollie is okay, but he's understandably frustrated. He needs to reset and regain the confidence he showed in yesterday’s practice sessions before Q1."
Despite the setback, Bearman’s impressive talent continues to shine through. It’s important to remember that racing on the streets of Baku can be particularly tricky. The tight corners and long straights make it easy for even seasoned drivers to misjudge their approach, and Bearman’s experience today is a stark reminder of how unforgiving this circuit can be.
As qualifying looms, all eyes will be on Bearman to see if he can bounce back from this crash and deliver the kind of performance Haas knows he's capable of. While the crash is a tough pill to swallow, it’s part of the learning curve for a rookie driver navigating the intense pressure of Formula 1.
