Padres’ Path to the Playoffs: What’s Next for San Diego?
As Major League Baseball's regular season approaches its final stretch, the San Diego Padres are not just hanging on by a thread—they’re in prime position to clinch a playoff berth. With only 12 games remaining, their postseason hopes are looking exceptionally strong, boasting a 95% chance of making it to October baseball. The Padres are firmly entrenched in the playoff race, but the road to a guaranteed spot involves navigating the nuances of the Magic Number and other teams’ performances.
So, what exactly is the Magic Number? In baseball terms, the Magic Number represents the combined total of a team’s wins and its competitors' losses needed to secure a playoff spot. For the Padres, their current Magic Number stands at 10. This means they need to either win 10 more games or have their rivals lose 10 games—or a combination of the two—to guarantee a postseason appearance. Each victory for the Padres and each loss by their rivals, particularly the Mets and Braves who are contending for the final National League Wild Card spot, reduces this number.

The Padres’ playoff scenario is far from straightforward. Their Magic Number decreases by one with every win they secure or with every loss by the teams currently outside the playoff bubble. Currently, the Mets and Braves are tied for the last playoff spot, and any shifts in their standings will directly impact San Diego’s playoff chances. For instance, if the Mets defeat the Nationals while the Braves lose to the Dodgers, the Padres’ Magic Number will drop to nine. Conversely, the number only decreases when the last team outside the playoffs loses, making each game and result crucial.
Looking ahead, the earliest the Padres could celebrate a playoff berth might be as soon as September 21, assuming they win all their upcoming games, including a crucial sweep of the Astros, and both the Mets and Braves experience extended losing streaks. However, such a perfect scenario is unlikely. More realistically, the Padres should aim to win at least four out of their last six games on this homestand. The Braves and Mets both face tough schedules, with Atlanta playing against the Dodgers and then hitting the road for games in Cincinnati and Miami, while the Mets are set to play the Nationals and then face the Phillies.
As the Padres head to Los Angeles for a three-game series starting September 24, their Magic Number could potentially drop to three if the Mets and Braves falter. If San Diego plays its cards right, they might even be celebrating a postseason appearance at Dodger Stadium with several games still left to play. In addition to securing a wild-card spot, the Padres are also in striking distance of the National League West title, trailing the Dodgers by just 3.5 games.
With a pivotal series against the Dodgers and a final showdown against the Diamondbacks, who are also vying for playoff spots, the Padres' remaining games will be critical. Their performance over these final weeks will not only determine their playoff fate but could also impact their seeding and potential matchups in the postseason. As San Diego fans eagerly anticipate the final results, the team’s focus remains on seizing every opportunity to solidify their place in October baseball.
